Summary
A major theme of the 1920s is change. The country had just emerged from the Great War, The War to End all Wars that was later known as World War One. The world changed during the 1920s. New discoveries, the availability of affordable automobiles, new inventions and spare time created a culture known as the “Roaring Twenties.” Students captured this era by creating a radio show similar to one that may have been broadcast in the 1920s by researching the decade to find accurate information to be shared, collaborating with group members to delegate responsibilities, and creatively present the information to their audience. This required higher order thinking and problem solving skills to determine how they would merge all information together and to utilize the technology resources available to them. Students were given a rubric for assessment and a brief tutorial on the audio/video editing softwares available to them. Part of their research was to find accurate information, images, and sound clips that would help capture the era and could be inserted into their final product. In this student example, the Campbell Soup commercial features the student playing the background music for her commercial to bring in a layer of creativity. Another student searched and found .wav files of a drumroll and the sound of a bat hitting a ball for the sports segment. This assignment required research, collaboration, creativity and higher-order thinking to complete. The students were challenged by the rigor this assignment presented and this group was able to successfully create a polished product.
